Fuel Pellets:
Pellet Specifications from the Pellet
Fuel Institute
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
has been working on updating the 1988 New Source Performance
Standard (NSPS) for wood heaters, which includes all residential
pellet heating appliances and will more than likely require
the federal standardization of pelletized fuels. Under the
NSPS, all residential pellet heating appliances will be required
to meet strict emission limits based on each appliance’s
Best Demonstrated Technology (BDT). This has major implications
for pellet fuel manufacturers and PFI’s standards program.
The
EPA has made it clear that it is not seeking to create a new
standard. It would like to use PFI’s current standard;
however, EPA adapting PFI’s standard is contingent upon
PFI editing its current standards to adhere to what EPA is
outlining and garnering support from the broader pellet industry.
To that
end, the PFI Standards Committee has been meeting weekly to
address program components that need to be bolstered or amended.
Based on feedback from PFI membership and the industry, the
Committee has edited current program documents and these revisions
are being considered by the PFI Board of Directors.
The structure
of the draft versions of the program documents has been approved
by the PFI Board of Directors and continues to be analyzed
and edited. These documents include:
•
PFI Standard Certification for Residential/Commercial Densified
Fuel
• PFI
North American Certification of Residential/Commercial Densified
Fuel
• PFI
Residential/Commercial Densifed Fuel QA/QC Handbook
Please
email PFI staff at pfimail@pelletheat.org
with any questions you have on the documents listed above.
